Md Mejanur Rahman, a Bangladeshi visual artist who is battling colon cancer, believes that such torment is better expressed through art than words."This is my first time having a solo exhibition abroad and I foresee that this exhibition will give a new insight into the despair of an ailing person," said Mejanur, also known as "Dewan Mizan".Bedridden after surgery a few months ago, he did all the paintings during his period of recovery. The trauma he went through is reflected in all his art work.
"'Metamorphosis', the theme of my work, means transformation. "All my paintings revolve around how a person's life changes from that of a normal, healthy person to a sick and ailing patient."The painting 'Golden Wings' portrays how the illness has crippled me," said Mejanur who uses only oil and acrylic in his work. The paintings are priced between RM50 and RM500."I have always lived for art and just lying in bed and doing nothing was traumatic, until it dawned on me that I was still able to paint with my hands.
