MIT's Zones of Emergency: Artistic Interventions – Creative Responses to Conflict & Crisis lecture series investigates initiatives and modes of intervention in contested spaces, zones of conflict, and areas affected by environmental disasters.
On Monday November 7th at MIT, Stella will speak about her artistic and curatorial history and inspirations, and how Urbano's partnerships and programming are supporting a new generation of young artists to foster change in their communities. In addition to archival footage of projects created at The Space in collaboration with Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, George Fifield, Andrei Codrescu, and others, Stella will present documentation of Urbano's recent collaborations with Boston artists as well as Mel Chin's Fundred project and Pedro Reyes' Palas por Pistolas/ Shovels for Guns.

The Freedom Trail on Trial
Exhibition and performance event at Urbano

Urbano's gallery and studio, 284 Amory St. 1st floor Jamaica Plain, MA
15 teens from neighborhoods all over Boston have been working in Urbano's studio since October with performance and installation artist Neil Horsky, creating a series of artistic interventions sited along Boston's iconic Freedom Trail. The group has completed an intense research period, assisted by Boston's Radical Reference librarians and historical re-enactor Andrew Olson. Now Horsky and his teen partners will create new memorials, participatory installations, and performance works that draw attention to forgotten details of the city's history, untold stories of Boston's past, and local history not included in official tours.
On December 8th in Urbano's gallery we celebrate the groundbreaking work of the Freedom Trail on Trial team, and the completion of another semester of exciting arts and performance projects at Urbano. The evening will include a large-scale gallery installation and interactive performance art works by teen students, as well as opportunities to make your own contribution to our project in the studio!
