Sonata of Womanhood
Sheikh Arif Bulbon
Promising sculptor Habiba Akther Papia works in metal, stone and sculpts recurring figures of women who, despite their inferior social status and their subordination by the male establishment, proclaim the stubbornly of their spirit. She is a feminist and for this reason she feels easy working with female figures. Most of the time she works in all mediums of sculpture. Wood, stone, bronze and wax are her favourite mediums. Woman figure and movement come vividly as her prime subject in her works.
A day-long symposium with sculptor Papia titled 'Sonata of Womanhood' was held at BILIA auditorium at Dhanmondi in the city recently.
Papia completed MFA from Department of Sculpture of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University in 2002. She is a faculty member of the Department of Fine Arts at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology in Dhaka. Besides, taking classes and giving lectures she is now doing her PhD on "Bronze Sculptures of the 20th Century.'
In the symposium, noted critic S Manzoorul Islam described about the works of Papia in the following way:
"The fact that Papia has titled her work Sonata of Womanhood shows that she does not believe that woman's marginality is an unalterable fact, but something which will have to change. She celebrates the possibility in compositions that through their musicality, point at the possibility of harmony."
Papia always makes the figures of women who are working, sitting, gossiping and also in different gestures and postures. She tries to present the daily life of women.
While mentioning about her working style Papia said, "I think that most of the women of our country are being suppressed by their male partners. They are being deprived in different sectors in their life. But I think despite the deprivations they are working for the development of the country, society and their family as well."
Papia's works are finally balanced, geometric shaped and reminiscent. Her sculptures do not weight, mass or volume but weightlessness of those works are itself a statement.
Like the underprivileged women of our society, those sculptures are too appear rather than fragile, but their metal hardness induces a viewer of the buoyancy of those women. Therefore, clustered shape of some sculptures where groups of women adhere together also creates strength to the compositions.
Papia feels comfortable in working on bronze for the longevity of her works. Unlike the other sculptors, she uses strips of cloth in getting the textures of the clothes on metal.
Basically Sonata of Womanhood portrays a sculptor's vision and philosophical theme so that the sculptor depicts and composes reality of the present scenario of our society. It makes her dynamic in a sense of aesthetic reason of the artistic point of view.
